We were able to create pinch pots this week! We were directed how to wedge, and knead the clay. We were also shown what a kiln was. This was a great way for the instructors to introduce new vocabulary to the group! Before we began we were shown a few examples and then we were instructed to brainstorm three ideas of our own. Then, we were given a small ball of clay and as a class we kneaded it together. We then created the hole or the pot portion of our creation. Next we were free to explore with the clay and create our figure. We had a few requirements such as, 2 additions, and one subtraction. We were offered the opportunity to paint our creation if we chose. For an extension activity I would have the students create leaves. The leaves could be created as pinch pots however, they would not have to be. The students could create their own leaves based on a science lesson we had just reviewed. The leaves could then be used to create a classroom tree that would be displayed in the class...

This week we learned how to paint and create prints with a jelly plate and roller. We were able to pick four different prints with the paints of our choices. These four prints were then cut into small pieces and glued onto a 12x12 square of construction paper. The construction paper and our prints were then made into a quilt. An extension activity would be to have the students talk about how everyone is different. The 12x12 squares would all be placed to create a quilt. As a class we would discuss that everyone is different but together we can do great things.

Teaching our ocean mosaic project was a great experience. We prepared for the students to make an ocean stain glass mosaic. This included the students to use the following materials: contact paper, tissue paper, and construction paper. The tissue paper was ripped and stuck to the contact paper along with the black construction paper border. The students also got to choose 3-4 ocean animals of their choice. Lastly, they were instructed to glue the ocean animals on the front of their tissue paper. As an extension activity I would have the students create a small poster of an ocean animal of their choice. This will help the students grasp more information and facts about animals within the ocean. This will also tie in nicely with a science unit

This was a great activity! We started out reading the Dr. Seuss story and then we were asked where we wanted to travel. We needed to think of four places we wanted to travel and a few symbols for each place. We then used construction paper, string, colored pencils, markers and crayons to create a hot air ballon. Our balloon had four sides. Each side was a different place with different symbols. Then we were given the top of a Dr. Seuss tree and we were to decorate it with our name on it! An extension activity would be to have the students plan a trip to  travel to one of their destinations. It would have to be for an older class, maybe 2nd or 3rd grade and I would give them a budget.

We were presented a lesson on Pablo Picasso and created our own Picasso masterpiece. After we learned about Pablo and his drawing style, we were given a 'cheat sheet' that we used to roll the dice and it told us what kind of facial features to draw. This was a great help to create diverse work within the class. We were also taught about the complementary colors that we were guided to use in our portrait. An extension activity would be to have each individual student create a fact card and we would then as a class create a fact collage. This collage would be placed near the portraits they made.

This week's project: Symmetrical Celebrities. We were taught about blending and shading by using a face of the celebrity. The topic was first introduced and we were able to practice two techniques, stippling and blending. Next, we were able to choose one face of a celebrity, half of a face to be exact. Lastly we were able to choose which technique we wanted to use to recreate the other side of the face.  A great extension activity would be to have the students write biographies about the individual they chose. They could be celebrities or they could be scientists or important historical figures. Once finished they would then be displayed together.
