The Hidden Safari was such a cool art project! First we were shown two jungle pictures. We were asked to describe what we saw and what was different between the two pictures. We were shown how to create our very own Ruby Red Glasses that were used later in the lesson. Next we practiced upside down drawing with small pictures. This helped us to focus on lines rather than the picture as a whole. Finally we were able to chose an animal and we practiced upside down drawing with a big picture. Our picture was drawn in a sky blue colored pencil, not pressing too hard yet not pressing too light. Finally we were instructed to use warm colors such as red, yellow and orange to draw shapes and patterns over our animal. Our final product was an animal hidden under our pattern that could only be seen by using our ruby red glasses.
An extension activity would be to have the students do a research project on their animal. It would be a small project finding information such as where does the animal live, what do they eat and what special characteristics they have. After the students have completed their research they could create a "Guess Who" powerpoint where the students try to guess their animal. It would be helpful to have each student chose a different animal.
